Here we have different types of peony blooms!
Can you identify what type of bloom you have in your garden?
The peony is my most favourite flower ever. I am so grateful to have a paddock of them at my front doorstep.
Our paddock of peonies was already established when we bought our home and there are so many varieties that can be admired. I am still trying to identify them, it is quite a time consuming process, when I second guess myself.
There are so many gorgeous blooms and some with a very rich fragrance. Not all peonies have a beautiful fragrance.
There are quite a few peony flower blooms and we have all of them in our paddock. Some more than others. Can you recognise what type of peony bloom you have in your garden?
Single peony flowers which have one or more rows of large petals, known as guard petals. These flowers also have a contrasting centre of pollen bearing stamen.
Japanese Peony Flower which are called so because the Japanese admire these pretty showy flowers, not because they are of Japanese origin. These blooms include varieties of flowers where the pollen bearing stamens transform into narrow petaloids, in other words they resemble the petal of the flower.
The Anemone Peony is somewhat similar to the Japanese but is different due to the absence of antheres (male reproductive cells) which can be found at the top of the stamen. The anthers role helps the flower to create pollen, therefore this type of peony does not create pollen.
Semi-Double Bombe peony flowers have a layered look and their ruffled petals are very showy. The pollen bearing anthers can be seen while the flower is in bloom.
Full Double peony flowers are recognised by their large bushy blooms that don’t have a recognisable centre as the stamens and sometime the stigmas transform into petals and can make up the main body of the flower.
Bomb Peony flowers have this name because of their large globular blooms of petals. There is always a row of guard petals that surround an inner circle. Prominent guard petals start for some and as the petaloids keep developing the bloom can end with less prominent guard petals to eventually make the globular bloom.
These are a collection of different types of peony blooms. Do you recognize any of these features in the peonies in your garden?
